Art of Giving hosting cook off

IN CELEBRATION of their third anniversary, the Art of Giving is hosting its first annual traditional conch chowder cook off on Saturday, November 2.

The event will take place noon – 3pm at no 9 Seventeen Plaza, across from the Post Office on Bank Lane.

A panel of judges will determine the best traditional conch chowder on Grand Bahama and the winner will receive a $500 cash prize presented by Miss Grand Bahama.

A $50 entry fee and submission of a completed application form are required to enter.

All entries must be submitted by Friday, October 25. Entry forms are available at the Art of Giving and Starbucks’ Coffee Bar.

This Bahamian cultural event is open to the public free of charge and features live Bahamian music by the Ultra Vibes Band, traditional Bahamian dancers, Junior Junkanoo, Bahamian artwork, a Bahamian caricature artist, a local historian and more.

As an added bonus, free Starbucks mixed beverage samples will also be available.

Additionally, a local historian will be giving a lecture describing the island’s development while interested persons browse the largest archive of historical photographs showing the development of Grand Bahama Island from the early 1940s-1970s.

These photos are presently only available for viewing at the Art of Giving and Starbucks’ Coffee Bar at the Seventeen Plaza.

“Come listen and learn,” said the organisers in a statement. “Ask the contestants about the secrets for their recipe of traditional Bahamian conch chowder. Watch them while they prepare their ingredients and stir the pot.

“Contestants will be offering tastings for purchase – so everyone can have their opinion of which contestant should be awarded the $500 grand prize.

“Bring your treasured old family recipe, cooking pot, utensils and ingredients. The Art of Giving will supply tent, tabletop single burner, and fuel.”
