EXUMA SOFTBALL

THE Pressure Hot Batters defeated the Police Crime Stoppers 11-9 in seven innings on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in their Exuma Softball Association’s best-of-seven championship series. The Hot Ballers won game one 6-5 on Thursday.

On Saturday in the 7th inning, the score was tied 6-6 and with two outs and two men on base, the Crime Stoppers sent Kerrington ‘Kay’ Rolle to the plate as he blasted a two-run in-the-park home run for a 9-6 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Pressure sent Dezon Curry, Jeffrey Johnson, Chris Rolle and Reno Curling out to tie up the score 9-9. To end the game with two men on base, Wensil ‘Big Cat’ Smith drove in the runs to win the game.

Leading the Pressure was Wensil Smith, who went 3-for-4 with his homer and three RBI. Dezon Curry was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Jeffrey Johnson 3-for-4 and two RBI and Reno Curling and Johnny Gray went 2-for-4 and a RBI. Wensil Smith was the winning pitcher.

In the loss, Kevin Ellis, Warshalski Smith, Shema Johnson and Walden Basset all went 3-for-4. Garth Rolle and Ernest Munroe both went 2-for-4. Jatero Rahming was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Kerrington Rolle 1-for-4 with two RBI and an in-the-parker. Garth Rolle took the loss.

On Thursday night, the Hot Ballers won 6-5 as Jeffrey Johnson had a perfect night going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Gary Darville was 2-for-3 with two RBI, scored one run and LeLando Francis and Kirklyn Deleveaux were both 1-for-3 with a run scored. Wensil Smith was the winning pitcher.

In the loss, Kevin Ellis went 2-for-3 and scored two runs with a RBI. Jetero Rahming, Wensil Smith and Tanai Brown both went 1-for-2 and scored a run each. Garth Rolle took the loss.

THE New Providence Oldtimers Softball Association is now into its postseason at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park at the Southern Recreation Grounds. But last week, the association released the final statistics from the regular season.

In the George Ferguson Division, Henry Cooper of Cabinet World won the batting title with a .492 average. He had 59 @bats with 29 hits, 28 runs, 21 RBI and four home runs.

The most runs was shared by Culbert ‘Buster’ Evans of Stubbs Construction and Sherman Ferguson of Cabinet World with 32 each.

Evans, Warfield Bain of Cabinet World and Elgin Smith of BFW shared the home run with five each.

In the Bursell Bradshaw Division, Andy Ford of the Sigma Crusaders won the batting title with a .600 average. He had 55 @bat with 33 hits, 36 runs, 27 RBI and five home runs. Ford also had most hits, runs and RBI. The most home runs was won by David ‘Lew’ Gardiner of the Andrae Gardiner Construction Builders with nine.

BSF AUSTIN KNOWLES

TOURNEY

THE Bahamas Softball Federation has announced that its annual Austin ‘King Snake’ Knowles National High School Softball Tournament is slated to be played over the weekend of October 24-26 at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

The federation is hoping to attract teams from throughout the Bahamas to participate in the senior boys and girls tournament. The tournament serves as a development for the federation, which looks at talented players to infuse into their senior programme within their affiliated island associations.

BSF NATIONALS

THE Bahamas Softball Federation is all set to hold its National Round Robin and Championship series over the weekend of October 31 to November 3 at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

The event is expected to attract the federation’s affiliated Family Island championship teams in both the men and women divisions, who will get to compete for the national championship title.

The New Providence Softball Association is now preparing to start its best-of-seven championship series this week to determine which teams will represent their association in the event.

BSC ACTION

THE Baptist Sports Council has announced that its annual Softball Classic will now get started on Saturday, October 5, at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

BAISS ACTION

THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools is slated to begin its 2013/2014 sports calendar year today with softball on the agenda.

The BAISS will be playing games in both the junior and senior boys and girls divisions on the various teams’ home fields, starting at 4pm. Softball will be the first sport on the calendar followed by basketball in November.

GSSSA ACTION

THE Government Secondary Schools Sports Association is scheduled to start its 2013/2014 sporting calendar today with volleyball. The GSSSA will be playing games in both the junior and senior boys and girls divisions at various sites, including CI Gibson, DW Davis, RM Bailey and AF Adderley, starting at 4pm. Volleyball will be the first event on the sporting calendar. It will be followed by basketball, starting in November.

SWIM CLUB

FIESTA

THE Barracuda Swim Club’s annual Awards Dinner is scheduled for 7pm Saturday (September 28) in the Windsor Room of the British Colonial Hilton Hotel. It’s called a Fiesta. The dress code is Mexican attire/smart casual. The tickets are priced at $45. The club will be presenting awards to outstanding swimmers over the past year.

CYCLING

TOUR DE NEW

PROVIDENCE

THE Bahamas Cycling Federation and the New Providence Cycling Association are scheduled to host the Tour De New Providence around the western end of the island September 28-29.

The weekend will get started on September 28 with the stage one individual timed trials for all categories competing over a three-mile course. That will be followed by stage II with the competitors competing in a 24 and 12-mile road race.

Then on Sunday, the long road race, ranging from 50 miles for the senior competitors to 18 miles for the juniors. The cyclists who complete the stages with the fastest recorded times will be declared winners.

BOXING SHOW

Amateur Boxing Club has announced that its 12th annual L Garth Wright Sr Golden Glove Tournament is slated to be held 6pm Saturday, September 28 at the Arawak Cay Fish Fry.

The tournament will bring together amateur boxing clubs from New Providence and across the Bahamas, including the Inagua Amateur Boxing Club, the Abaco Amateur Boxing Club and the Freeport Amateur Boxing Club.

Bouts will include: Colin Johnson vs Keiron Knowles and Aparachio Davis vs Tyrone Oliver. Ten other matches will be featured. All amateur boxing clubs are invited to participate.

The tourney will recognise Charles Thompson and the late Kevin Smith for their contribution to the sport of boxing, especially the hosting of the British Commonwealth Championship Fight at the Poinciana Arena on Bernard Road in 1986.

BSC TRACK CLASSIC

THE Baptist Sports Council is scheduled to hold its 2013 Track and Field Classic 10am October 19 at the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium.

HOLY SPIRIT

RUN/WALK

THE Holy Spirit Anglican Church is scheduled to hold a fun run/walk 6am October 19.

The route will begin at the church on Howard Street and travel through the historic Chippingham area, passing Fort Charlotte on to West Bay to Goodman’s Bay (for walkers) and to the round-a-bout at Cable Beach (for runners) returning to the church.

Participants will be grouped according to their sex and age as of December 31 and awards will be presented to the first place only in the U-15, U-20, U-30, U-40 and 40 & over in both the male and female categories. A trophy for the church or organisation with the most participants will be presented.
