'Believe in Yourself' dance battle

LAST WEEK Friday, Bahamian musician Julien Thompson hosted the first ever “Believe in Yourself” dance battle. The event held at the Kendall G L Issacs Gym, showcased dancers from throughout the country, competing for cash prizes and awards.

The dance categories included Junkanoo dance, liturgical dance, an open category, and an inter-school teams competition.

“We have so much talent when it comes to dancers in the Bahamas and this is just to put the spotlight on them. Other than Junkanoo there is really no platform for it,” said Julien.

The EpicfoRealz Local Celebrity Basketball Game also took place, featuring street ball entertainers from the Bahamas and the United States. Potcake, the Nassau “Street Philosopher,” served as the referee for the basketball session.

After the event, Julien said: “Still shocked by the support we got last night. Bahamians came out and showed that we do support one another. I am humbled. Shout out to our sponsors: the Sport’s Centre, Cash and Go, Scotia Bank, Right Weigh and BTC. The Caribbean Slide team was also amazing last night. Apart from that we had about 300 young Bahamians dancing together and a large number of them were young men that we tend to judge. The platform for dancers in the Bahamas is set. Big ups to the Valley, Saxons, Roots and Colours. So many people to thank.”
