BEC CHAIRMAN Leslie Miller yesterday blamed the recent power outages throughout New Providence on “engine trips” at both the Clifton Pier and Baillou Hills Power Station.
However, Mr Miller said crews were dispatched early yesterday morning to correct the issues and power should have been restored to all the affected areas by yesterday afternoon.
“We had some problems with engines in Clifton Pier and Baillou Hills. The engines just tripped and we really don’t know why yet. These things just happen sometimes, these machines are man-made and some times they malfunction,” he said.
“But we got things back up and running and power was restored. We sorted it out rather quickly, but we are trying to stop all these trips from happening, we apologise for the inconvenience, but some times these things are beyond our control.”
Despite assurances from Mr Miller, members of the public still complained of power outages. In fact, one woman called The Tribune to say her power has been on and off more than 30 times over the past month.
“This is ridiculous. Didn’t they just get those generators? They keep claiming that there isn’t any load shedding, but the power in my area can’t seem to stay on for three straight days,” she said.
“It’s been off more than three times in the past 24 hours. This on and off garbage is destroying everything, you can’t get anything done, you can’t work from home, I can’t plan my life.”
Another woman, who wished to remain anonymous, contacted The Tribune from Harbour Island.
She said the power has been on and off for the past week, leaving hotel guests without running water as well as electricity.
“Its appalling what is happening here. The power was off all day Thursday and off and on since then. This is the busy season, but it is ruining the experience for the guests,” she said.
“It is really inconvenient. When the power turns off, so does the water, the internet and the cable. Even with the generator, the water, cable and internet do not turn back on. So what are we supposed to do? We have been calling to try and figure out what is going on, but cannot get any answers.”
Mr Miller said he was aware of the difficulties in Harbour Island and a team has been dispatched to resolve the issues.

"The engines just tripped and we really don’t know why yet." He just admitted that ignorance is the cause of the power outages. No surprises.

On East Street the power goes off 5-6 times between 8 a.m. and noon, then sometimes another 2-3 times in the evening. Almost impossible to get anything done that requires electricity and most electronic equipment, computers alarm systems, even refrigerators and larger appliances are being damaged. This started shortly after the chairman made his attack on BTC and is now into the third week. IMAGINE S U M M E R !

So here it is "These things just happen sometimes" and that is okay. BTC outage and URCA insisting that BTC pay compensation. Why the difference? It can't be foreign ownership as BTC is now Bahamian controlled and the government reaps huge dividends, so it must be that Mr Miller and the government are not responsible for supplying a reliable level of service to the Bahamian public.
