Some might question the value of writing on the importance of employees taking vacation time and seeking opportunities to refresh themselves. There seems, though, to be a common and growing trend for staff to work 52 weeks per year and not yield any time to rejuvenate and get away from the demands of work. We dialogue, then, on the value of vacation, rest and rejuvenation for the advancement of productivity and efficiency in the workplace.
Before we delve into this discussion, it seems wise to briefly discuss why Bahamians are neglecting to vacation. Upon close examination of this somewhat sensitive topic, it is clear that many among us believe that they are not financially able to take vacation.
In many cases, workers are either not paid for their vacation leave or make too little on a weekly basis, and the benefit of being paid to work through their vacation seems too attractive to give up. In fact, I have heard employees say aloud: “If I take vacation, where would I go, what would I do and, more importantly, how would I pay for it?” Sadly, many see vacation as an expensive luxury that they are simply unable to afford.
Furthermore, there are still many older persons belonging to the Baby Boomer and veteran generation who view vacation as an indulgence for the lazy. They have not fully embraced work-life balance, and still see their work as the thing that validates them more than anything else. Any interruption in that schedule of work is unwelcome.
So what, then, are the benefits of employees taking vacation? What do we say to companies who perhaps need to make adjustments in their policy on this matter, or to individuals who see it as thrill over necessity? Here are five of the key benefits (tired or not) for taking vacation:
- Relieves stress
You get to leave everything behind and take a breather from the stresses of the job.
- Improves your mental skills
Your mind needs sustained rest as much as your body does. Don’t take any work on your vacation; it’s time to relax both body and mind.
- Improves your physical health
The routine of work can take its toll on your body. Rest, relaxation, sleep and other physically satisfying activities during your vacation period are crucial to your value to the organisation in the future.
- Srengthens family ties
Please go on vacation. Your family needs you. Alone time with spouse, parents, siblings, children, grand-children is vital to personal and professional development.
- Enjoy life
Taking time off can be a great opportunity to meet new people, laugh and do the things that you most enjoy. It’s true, you only live once, so seek fulfillment and healthy lifestyles in this one chance at life that you have.
