THREE new champions, one from St John’s and two from the Eagles Nest, were crowned on Saturday as the Baptist Sports Council concluded its 2014 Basketball Classic at the DW Davis Gymnasium.
In the 15-and-under division, pennant winning St John’s had to play all three games before they knocked off BIBA 41-38 in the clincher to take the title. Adam Johnson was named the most valuable player.
St John’s won game one 33-30, but BIBA came back to even the series 41-39 in game two.
In the 19-and-under division, pennant winning Eagles Nest completed a two-game game sweep over Macedonia. After winning game one 53-52, Eagles Nest won game two 61-50 to seal the deal. Ken Lockhart was named the MVP.
And in the men’s division, the same two teams met, but this time the Eagles Nest had to go to the third and deciding game, winning 72-65 in overtime to secure the title. Chrisoff Stuart was named the MVP. The Eagles Nest had won the opener of the series on Thursday night, 72-64, but Macedonia came back and pulled off the equaliser 74-69 on Saturday.
Here’s a summary of the games played in each series:
Eagles Nest 72, Macedonia 65
Able Joseph came through with nine of his 13 points in the extra four minutes as the Eagles Nest broke away from a 54-54 tie at the end of regulation to win their first ever BSC men’s basketball title. Christoff Stuart had 15 and Perez Thompson added 13. Patrick Brice had a game high 20 points, Delano Knowles chipped in with 12.
Macedonia 74, Eagles Nest 69
Delano Knowles scored a game high 18 points and Patrick Brice had 17 as Macedonia evened the men’s series on Saturday. Perez Thompson had 17 and Christoff Stuart 16 in a losing effort.
Eagles Nest 72, Macedonia 64
In the opener of the men’s series on Thursday night, Christoff Stuart exploded for a game high 28 points and both Kenrico Lockhart and Perez Thompson had nine in the win. Patrick Brice had 19 and Delano Knowles eight in the loss.
Eagles Nest 60, Macedonia 57
Kenrico Lockhart pumped in a game high 22 points ad Jeffery Williams had seven as the Eagles Nest secured their 19-and-over title with a two game sweep. Delroy Grandison had 12 in the loss.
Eagles Nest 61, Macedonia 56
Kenrico Lockhart scored a game high 13 points and Dario McKenzie had 10 as the Eagles Nest took the opener of their 19-and-under series. Delroy Grandison had 12 points in the loss.
St John’s 41, BIBA 38
Adam Johnson scored six and Lorenzo Riley, Raheem Nixon and Kedron Williams all had four as St John’s clinched their first 15-and-under victory in the third game. Alexander Scavalla scored 20 in the loss.
BIBA 41, St. John’s 39
Alexander Scavalla scored 14 points and both Lorenzo Stuart and Gerron Goodman had nine in the win as BIBA stayed alive in game two of their 15-and-under series. Detarrio Thompson had seven and Adam Johnson six in the loss.
St John’s 33, BIBA 30
Adam Johnson scored a game high 13 and both Lorenzo Riley and Stephon Gibson chipped in with four as St John’s took the opener of their 15-and-under series. Alexander Scavalla and Lorenzo Stuart had nine each in the loss.
In addition to the team awards, the BSC selected Damian Nixon from St John’s, Sterling Pratt from the Eagles Nest and Geno Campbell from Men of Vision as the Coaches of the Year in the 15-and-under, 19-and-under and men’s divisions respectively.
