DRUGS Enforcement Unit (DEU) officers discovered more than $1m worth of marijuana on Thursday afternoon in Exuma, hours after they seized $2m worth of marijuana on a boat in waters off New Providence.

Officer in charge of the DEU, Superintendent Samuel Butler, said the two incidents are “definitely connected”.

The latest drug discovery was made around 3pm on Thursday on Williams Cay, five miles off Barraterre, Exuma, to where DEU officers, along with police in Exuma and assisted by United States Enforcement Administration officers, had gone acting on intelligence.

Coming on the heels of a $2m dollar seizure off New Providence, the police have dealt another major blow to drug traffickers in the Bahamas. This latest bust is a seizure of over 763lbs of marijuana with a street value of $1,144,500.

No one was taken into custody in connection with this seizure and investigations continue.

Earlier on Thursday DEU officers had intercepted a 30 foot Midnight Express boat 30 miles southwest of New Providence around 2am. A search of the vessel revealed a large quantity of marijuana with a street value of $2m. Three Bahamian men on board aged 42, 39 and 38, were taken into custody.

Supt Butler said: “There has been an increase in the trafficking movement, which has led to an increase in seizures. I can’t say why it has increased but from my point of view it seems that more Bahamians are making an effort to go into producing countries, like Jamaica, and actually retrieve the drugs and bring it back themselves.”

So far, for the year, police have captured more than $11m worth of marijuana and $13m worth of cocaine.

Where does that $24 million go??

Cobalt 10 years, 4 months ago

It's not actual money, you incompetent idiot! The article is stating the monetary street-value of the drugs. All drugs confiscated by the authorities are suppose to be used as evidence in their respective court cases, and then incinerated! Like you should be.

An adult??? Please!!! You couldn't pass as an adult on your best day! A sensible person only need glance at the utter childish, nonsensical, rubbish that you post on this site everyday to discern that you're a petulant, idiotic, silly little child.... and a dumb one at that! You are a classic example of why Bahamians should NOT send their children to Woodcock primary school! A textbook display of what it means to be an imbecile!! Every time you open your mouth you give the Bahamas a concentrated, potent dose of stupidity!! Confine your ignorance to yourself please!!

What REALLY happens to the confiscated drugs??????????????

Cobalt 10 years, 4 months ago

It's suppose to be incinerated. But this is the Bahamas, so much of it is filtered back on the streets thru corruption in branches of our national security agencies.

If it can happen in France .............. certainly it can happen in The Bahamas. So that they have a nice go-fast boat ........ put that back out on drug or illegals or poachers patrol down in Inagua or Ragged Island

But seriously, if the drugs were sold in the country, where does the proceeds go? who benefits?. But for them being caught, the drugs would have been sold in The Bahamas.

What are y'all talking about??? If and when drugs are sold in the Bahamas, then the drug traffickers and factions accosiated with their organizations are the ones who make a monetary profit from it. Factions including corrupt government officials, and also corrupt members of our National Security agencies. There are no proceeds!! Only victims!!!

A government can't suggest, much-less, engage in the practice of selling illegal drugs.... no matter what the potential profits are. This would be the epitome of treachery. The very thought discredits every value; every principle; every creed; even the very foundation on which the State was built. This is the difference between respectable nations and a banana republic! If the Bahamas government wants to turn a monetary profit from the sale of illicit drugs such as marijuana and hashish, then they had better modify the laws to suit their purpose! Anything less is criminal! But remember... the sale of any type of psychedelic drug can only yield blood-money. And as the drugs are sold; lives are destroyed! More drugs can only yield more drug-addicts, more broken-homes, more broken-lives.... and this is the last thing our nation needs. To imagine that any government official can consider profiting from illegal drugs is a deceptive betrayal of the public trust! But apparently Perry Christie doesn't seem to see things this way; especially since he appointed a known drug-profiteer as his Deputy PM. I wonder if he realizes that if the PLP loses the next general election, he will be facing multiple extradition hearings. These Federal officers are working feverishly compiling a case against him. Another disgraceful black-eye for the Bahamas. Smt

That's because Bahamians are the biggest hypocrites in the world. We wanna go to church every Sunday and talk about living a holy life and on the other hand we vote in a bunch of criminals. We are quick to call ourselves a Christian nation yet we have the devil at the stern of our country. SMT!
