Please don’t let this homophobic rubbish kill these constitutional amendments just because some of our menfolk want to force their women to continue to walk two paces behind them.
If the addition of the word “sex” to the list of non-discriminatory prohibitions in Article 26 of our constitution causes Bahamians to break into a cold sweat, then let’s think of a word that no one can possibly stumble over.
The proposition now is to add the word “sex” to the list of conditions against which a person cannot suffer discrimination. In the Constitution a person cannot be discriminated against because of their race, place of origin, political opinions, colour or creed — instead of adding the word “sex”, then add the word “nationality”, which is sexless. After all it is the male foreign spouse of a Bahamian woman who is being brought into the fold — it’s not his sex, but his foreign-ness and that can be best described by “nationality.”
Problem solved.
For God’s sake, let’s stop contemplating our navel and get on with the job of creating a more equal society.
Just call me–
SEXLESS
