The second Youth Olympic Games, an elite sporting event for young people from all over the world, has had some interesting results from the 14-member Bahamian team in Nanjing, China, so far.
It’s an event distinct from other youth sports events as the athletes also integrate a unique Culture and Education Programme (CEP), based around five main themes - Olympism, Social Responsibility, Skills Development, Expression and Well-being and Healthy Lifestyles. The event is designed for athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 years.
TRACK & FIELD
On Thursday as day seven of the games and the second for athletics kicked off at the Nanjing OSC Stadium, Jenae Ambrose ran 11.84 seconds for third place in heat one of the 100m. The heat was won by Xiaojing Liang of China in 11.64 and Sam Geddes of Australia was second in 11.69. Both Liang and Geddes turned in personal best times. At the end of the four heats of qualifying, Ambrose placed eighth overall as she advanced to the A final that will be held on Saturday. Ambrose will run out of lane one.
In the men’s qualifying, Tyler Bowe was also third in the last of the four heats in 10.78. Winning the heat was Trae Williams of Australia in 10.51 and Sydney Siame of Zambia was second in 10.58. As a result of his performance, Bowe finished sixth overall as he also qualified for the A final that will be contested on Saturday. He will run out of lane eight.
Today, Dreshanae Rolle is slated to run out of lane five in the last of two heats. She will either advance to the A or B final that will both run on Monday.
On Saturday, Serena Brown will be the fourth of eight competitors competing in the women’s discus B final and Henri Delauze will run out of lane nine in the men’s 400m A final as the Bahamas completes its participation in the track and field competition.
SAILING
After a day off on Thursday, Paul de Souza is expected to be back in the water at the Jinniu Lake Sailing Venue today when he competes in races 9 and 10 of the Byte CII - Men’s One Person Dinghy series.
After the first seven races, de Souza was sitting in 21st place with 101 points out of a field of 30 competitors. He recorded previous finishes of 11th, 24th, 21st, 26th, 13th, 14th and 18th. At the end of the meet, de Souza will get to throw out his worst finish from the competition, which will be the 26th in the fourth race.
TENNIS
In mixed doubles competition at the Tennis Academy Court, Grand Bahamian Rasheed Carey and his partner Simona Heinova from the Czech Republic advanced without having to work up a sweat. The duo won by a walk-over against the team of Dabin Kim and Duckhee Lee from Korea.
Carey and Heinova are set to be back in action today when they take on the No. 5 seeded team of Jill Teichmann of Switzerland and Jan Stanislaw Zielinski of Poland in the quarter-final round.
Carey and Justin Roberts both competed in singles and teamed up in doubles, but they got eliminated in the first round. Roberts also teamed up with Renata Zarazua Ruckstuhl in mixed doubles, but they got knocked out in the first round as well.
SWIMMING
At the Nanjing OSC Natatorium, Dustin Tynes produced a seventh place finish in the men’s 50m breaststroke in 29.35. The heat was won by Nikola Obrovac of Croatia in 27.97. Tynes’ performance placed him out of the top 16 spots as he didn’t advance to the semi-final.
Today, 800m freestyle bronze medallist Joanna Evans from Grand Bahama will be out for another medal when she competes in the fourth of five heats in the women’s 400m freestyle. She will be competing in lane two. The final will also take place today.
And Laura Morley will compete in the 200m breaststroke. She will be in lane eight in the last of three heats. The final will be held today as well.
