THE Fox Hill community gathered on Freedom Park on Saturday evening for their annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, honouring the four victims of gun violence through song and prayer near the first anniversary of their deaths.
The ceremony officially kicked off the Christmas season for the historic community.
Paying tributes to the memories of the victims were chairman of the Fox Hill Festival Committee Maurice Tynes and the local member of parliament, Fred Mitchell.
They were called “stars” that had fallen, “community builders” and “good people” who simply died needlessly, senselessly and too soon.
The large crowd was also treated to musical tributes. There were performances by the Rake ‘n Scrape band from the Sandilands Primary School; a chorale from the L W Young High School; a group of senior citizens from the Fox Hill community and a trumpet solo of a medley of Christmas carols by local musician Vincent Wright.
Four white stars were placed on the Christmas tree to symbolise the dead and what they meant to the community of Fox Hill in memory of victims Shaquille Demeritte, 19, Eric Morrison, 49, Claudenzo Davis, 37, and Sheniqua Sands, 30.
On December 27, 2013 the four victims were shot dead in a violent drive-by shooting on the basketball court at the Fox Hill roundabout while awaiting the results of the Boxing Day Junkanoo parade.
