THE devasted family of Lamorn Moxey yesterday spoke of their pride in knowing that he died helping someone in distress.

Mr Moxey, 40, was knifed by a lone assailant after he and others went to the aid of a woman who had been robbed in Freeport, Grand Bahama, on Monday.

The father of five children aged from four to 16, has been described as a someone who was always willing to help others. “He was very helpful, that was in his nature,” his elder sister, Coralee Godet, told the Big T. “He would help anyone in distress.”

Grand Bahama Police have arrested 29-year-old Rasheed Farrington, of Cabot Drive, in connection with Mr Moxey’s murder. Inspector Terecita Pinder said Farrington is assisting police with their investigation into Monday’s incident.

Ms Godet said her brother was employed as a handyman and also worked as an assistant to their brother, who is a plumber. “He was the baby of the family and it has been very difficult, especially for our mother,” she said. “I feel a little better though, knowing that he was doing a good deed and that his death was not in vain. He saw a woman in distress and he went to help and lost his life in the process.”

Insp Pinder thanked family members of the suspect and members of the public who assisted police with Farrington’s capture.

On Monday, around 10am, a woman was robbed of her handbag in the Freeport area, her assailant snatching it from her vehicle and fleeing. Mr Moxey and another man gave chase and caught up with the assailant and were able to recover the handbag. However, during a struggle Mr Moxey was fatally stabbed in the stomach. He was taken to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

As the Christmas season approaches, police are advising the public to be vigilant. Shoppers are advised not to leave shopping bags, purses, cellular phones and other valuables in plain sight in their vehicles.
