THE Cuckoos RC appear well on their way to a climb atop the league standings once again in the Bahamas Rugby Football Union and lead the race for both the Nassau and Heineken Bahamas Cup.
Cuckoos ended the first half of the season with a spotless 4-0 record, highlighted by a 33-7 win over Baillou RC in a Nassau Cup matchup at the Winton Rugby Centre this weekend.
Cuckoos received a pair of tries each from Kevin Deveaux and Michael Watkins, while Chad Thompson added the fifth score. Kyle Charlton scored the lone try for Baillou.
Charles Smith, Cuckoos captain, said with the first portion of the season in the books, Cuckoos continue to work toward their ultimate goal.
“It was a massive win for us. Everyone went into this game today with high expectations as a lot of pressure was on us to win today and we did just that. I’m very proud of the guys, everybody dug deep and we pulled off some fantastic defence and scored some fantastic tries today.
“Special mention has to go to Drew Brown, our coach, he has been the driving force behind us this year and pushing everyone to their full potentials.
“Also two standout guys Kevin Devaux and Michael Watkins on some individual brilliance. It was a great way to end 2014 and we will work even harder over the next few weeks to maintain our 4-0 record,” he said.
After claiming the Bahamas Cup title two years ago, Cuckoos struggled last season and entered the Heineken Bahamas Cup playoffs as fourth seeds.
“We’ve been putting in the hard work in training and it paid dividends,” Smith said. “It is just the start for us and we won’t get carried away, there are a lot of games left and we have to keep up the hard work.”
