Mr Guzmán said he could not say when his country would respond, but the men’s testimony would be a part of the proceedings “one way or another.”

In the event that the men are not permitted to travel back to the Bahamas, he said officials from the Bahamas can be allowed to travel to Cuba.

Allegations of abuse at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre were made last year and led to a series of protests from the Democracy Movement, a Cuban exile group in Miami.

Maybe our own government would be wise to issue a travel advisory for alll Bahamalander's planning to visit Cuba for pleasure, medical or business reasons"

"Traffic accidents are a frequent cause of arrest and detention in Cuba. Accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes, and the onus is on the driver to prove innocence. Regardless of the nature of the accident, it can take five months to a year for a case to go to trial. In most cases, the driver will "not be allowed to leave" Cuba until the trial has taken place. In some cases, the driver will be imprisoned during this delay."
