MANY people equate success with having fame and fortune. However, that barely scratches the surface, according to Bahamian pastor, Dave Burrows.
In his new book ‘The Law of Good Success’ Pastor Burrows examines the true meaning of success by drawing reference from the experiences of others.
“In ‘The Law of Good Success’ I try to differentiate between what I call success and good success. A lot of people pursue money and fame and they equate that with success. But in the book I examine people who I consider successful but they never made money or fame a priority. I try to show persons that you can be successful no matter where you are in life simply by maximising your potential,” he told Tribune Religion.
“I use a number of examples and focus on the fact that success is not prospering in one area of life. Sometimes we look at somebody who is a successful businessman and we call them a success but then they may have a family that is falling a part. So when I talk about success, I talk about success in all areas of life.”
Pastor Burrows said there are many people who are currently in stressful situations because of their pursuit of success, yet have no clue that journey does not have to be taxing.
“People are stressing themselves out while trying to acquire money, fame and gain more status. There is a statement that I use, that says ‘you do not need things to enjoy life, you need life to enjoy things’. And so the focus is on getting your life in order and letting everything else follow as opposed to getting things and hoping that would make you happy,” he said.
‘The Law of Good Success’ is geared to anyone pursuing their goals, Pastor Burrows said.
Pastor Burrows is a youth and family specialist and has served on three occasions as chairman of the Bahamas National Youth Advisory Council, a group which advises the Bahamas government on youth matters.
He has exerted his efforts on youth ministry in the Bahamas and the world through a variety of programmes focused on gangs, drug users, troubled youth and young people generally. His methods and down to earth approach have earned him the nickname ‘The Ruffneck Pastor’.
Pastor Burrows travels locally and internationally as a conference speaker, motivating young people, churches, youth ministries and school groups to reach another level in Christ.
He has been a speaker at The Potters House of Denver, Crenshaw Christian Center (Dr Fredrick Price), West Angeles Church of God in Christ (Bishop Charles Blake), Victory Christian Center (Pastor Robyn Gool, North Carolina), Calvary Revival Center (Pastor Courtney Macbath, Virginia), Oral Roberts University, Messiah College as well as churches and conferences throughout the Caribbean and America. He has also been a speaker for international youth organisations Christ For the Nations and Youth With a Mission.
Apart from ‘The Law of Good Success’ he has authored books including ‘Sex & Dating’, ‘Making the Most of Your Teenage Years’, ‘Strategies for Saving the Next Generation’ and ‘Talk to Me’ and he hosts TV and radio shows including ‘The Ruffneck Myxx’ and ‘Effective Youth’.
