MINISTER of Education Jerome Fitzgerald has officially endorsed AKA Honours’ Day as the sorority programme gears up to provide thousands in scholarships to this year’s top graduating female students from across the country.
Executives from the Eta Psi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. sorority appealed for parents and students to take on an active role in making sure their school selects an applicant of the programme.
Alana Ingraham, the graduate chapter’s president, said: “Unfortunately in the past we have had some delays in receiving applications from various schools, so we are encouraging students and their parents this year to make sure that they are in close contact with their guidance counsellors so that they may be selected as a representative for their school.”
Underscoring that the more than 30-year-old programme has granted some $100,000 in scholarships thus far, Ms Ingraham said top students selected by their school for the programme have the opportunity to receive one of many scholarships, ranging from $500 up to $7,500.
The non-profit organisation also made an appeal to the private sector to contribute to the programme by assisting with travel and accommodations for Family Island students.
Interested students are asked to contact their school’s guidance counsellor for more information.
