AUTHORITIES say they are following significant leads in one of two shooting incidents that killed a 26-year-old man at a popular East Street South take-away restaurant over the weekend.
Yesterday, police said investigations were continuing. They further appealed to members of the public with information to come forward no matter how small or insignificant the tip might seem.
On Sunday, at about 4pm, Dior Johnson was shot outside Phoenix Cafe at East Street South when two men in a black Maxima pulled up. One man got out of the vehicle and opened fire on him, hitting him repeatedly about the body. The gunmen then sped away from the scene.
While police did not confirm whether Johnson was known to police, relatives present at the scene said he had been questioned previously by police in connection with another murder.
In September last year, Mr Johnson was one of five suspects named by police as part of a murder investigation.
A relative at the scene said: “He wasn’t a saint, but he was a good guy. He didn’t do anything. He was accused of murder a couple times.”
While the Phoenix Cafe was open at the time of the shooting, it could not be confirmed how many persons witnessed the horrifying incident.
Not long after, his family members expressed outrage that video footage of Mr Johnson, wounded with blood flowing from his body circulated on social media.
The incident took place just hours after another man’s body was riddled with bullets near an Urban Renewal office in Englerston.
Police said that in that incident the man was visiting relatives at Moore Avenue when he was approached by two men on a motorbike who shot him and fled the scene.
Anonymous calls can be placed to police at 919, 328-TIPS, Crime Stoppers or 1-242-300-8476 in the Family Islands. Police said their investigations are also continuing into the second death.
