BODYBUILDING

FOUR OFF TO ARNOLD CLASSIC

FOUR competitors will be heading off to compete in the prestigious Arnold Classic this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. And according to Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation president Danny Sumner, he expects for all of them to perform very well.

Led by reigning national physique champion Kenny Mackey, a veteran bodybuilder, the team will comprise of Ethan Quant, who will be competing in the male physique category, and Dawn Charlton and Jheaneale Bahadosingh, who are both competing in the female fitness category.

The classic is named after former bodybuilder turned former governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It provides an opportunity for the winners of each division to earn their International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) professional card.

In addition to the classic, Sumner said competitors also have an opportunity to secure their pro cards at the Central American and Caribbean Championships, the top bodybuilding competition in the region and the World Championships.

“The male physique is one of the big eye-catching events in bodybuilding. It came along when the swimsuit section was introduced,” Sumner said. “Dawn Charlton, like Kenny, competed in the CAC Championships last year and placed fourth in the medal round. So I think each of the competitors will do very well. Kenny is the bright spot for the Bahamas, but we expect that all four of them will compete very well.”

CYCLING

MAJOR WIN NPCA ROAD RACE

THE New Providence Cycling Association held its Road Race Series Sunday with one of the fastest times recorded for a 30-mile course by a local cyclist.

Jay Major won the gruelling race in one hour, 10 minutes and 26 seconds. He was followed by Anthony ‘Biggie’ Colebrooke in 1hr, 11 mins and 05 secs. Third place went to Chris Curry in one second behind Colebrooke.

It was about who was the strongest to survive as the group of cyclists took the pace out early. Major, Colebrooke and Deangelo Sturrup made a break some 20 miles in the race. Colebrook was later dropped and Major and Sturrup continued for an additional mile.

At the mile 24 marker, Major pulled away and the pace-setting was too much for Sturrup. Major continued on in a solo attack as he pulled off his second victory for the year.

During the up-hill finish, Colebrooke was able to catch and outsprint the field for second, followed closely by Curry, while Ryan Reid got fourth and Tracey Sweeting was fifth.
