TWO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL SCOUT TRAINING THE Scout Association of The Bahamas recently selected two outstanding young men to receive international training during the inaugural Interamerican Leadership Training programme held in Houston, Texas. The two, Miguel Neely and Cleveland Walker Jr. were the proud recipients of this prestigious one-week training course, which ran from December 26 to January 1.
Mr Neely, a Defence Force Officer, first became a Scouter at the age of five and belongs to the 10th Bahamas Division of St Joseph’s Catholic Church. He plays the trumpet and also directs the Scouts brass band. Mr Walker is a Sea Scout and a Computer Science major at the College of The Bahamas. He has spent five years being a part of the Scouts Association of The Bahamas. The two role models will also be ‘Messengers of Peace’, which qualifies them to be advisors and future leaders in Scouting.
Miguel and Cleveland will have a lot to offer in The Bahamas where there is a growing need for positive young men in nation building.
Adding their sentiments to this occasion were veteran leaders Alexander Gibson, Chief Scout and Robert A. F. Bartlett, National Training Commissioner of the Scout Association of The Bahamas.
Mr Gibson emphasised the need for leaders to continue the work “because there are a lot of boys and this will serve as a boot camp.”
Mr Bartlett said the two were selected for their faithful involvement in activities “and they are expected to give back much knowledge on their return.” It is also expected that Neely and Walker will benefit from hands on training, resource gathering and networking during this life changing experience. Sessions included youth protection training, values of Scouting, the Messenger of Peace Programme, effective communication, understanding the “group”, team development, problem solving/decision making, consensus building, conflict management, the Design a Messenger of Peace project, a trip to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), dinner with Consulate Generals from the Interamerican region and personal reflection. The Messengers of Peace and United States Fund funded the weeklong training course, which is geared to ages 17 to 25, for International Scouting.
