FUNERAL services for Michael John Stewart, 84, of Winton Highway, who died in Doctor’s Hospital on New Year’s eve, will be held at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk, Princes Street, on Saturday, January 4, at 3pm.
The Rev Bryn MacPhail will officiate and interment will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery.
Mr Stewart, formerly of Jersey, Channel Island, UK, came to the Bahamas to join Kemp’s accounting firm in August, 1956. He later joined the Maura brothers in Maura Lumber Company. In June, 1964, as a member of the Nassau Operatic Society, he met his future wife, Marsha Brown, in the production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “Oklahoma.” They were married in September of that year.
In 1977 the Stewarts bought the Coin of the Realm on Charlotte Street, which the family has operated for the past 36 years.
Mr Stewart is survived by his wife Marsha, son Bruce Stewart, daughter Karen (Ivano) Alliata, grandchildren Philip and Christian Stewart, Juliette and Matteo Alliata, mother-in-law Dorothea Brown, brother Jaffery Stewart of Ontario, Canada, sister Ann (Sasha) Smith of Devon, England, sister-in-law Molly Walton, nieces Graciela Annie (Rob) Davis and Josee (Jim Graham) Stewart of Canada, Francesca Smith and Vanessa (Peter) Murphy of England, nephews Patrick (Linda) Stewart of Abaco, Rupert Thompson (Akemi) of Japan, Nicholas Smith (Fenella) of England, cousins Nigel Stewart of Bermuda and Nicola Stewart of Australia, and numerous great nieces and great nephews. He is pre-deceased by his mother Graciela Whitty Stewart of Chile, father John Mowbray Stewart of England, father-in-law Philip Brown, brother-in-law Brian Brown, sister-in-law Celine Stewart, uncle-in-law David Knowles and aunt-in-law Ethelyn Knowles.
