PM gets tough on his legacy

By Ava Turnquest

IN the fight against the country’s “culture of killing”, Prime Minister Perry Christie said yesterday he will put a police officer on every street corner if necessary.

Hitting back at critics of his anti-crime plan, Mr Christie said his government will not compromise on the effort to fight crime.

He also said he will not have his legacy tied to a total reliance on the police and its leadership.

Speaking at a holiday luncheon for Urban Renewal staff yesterday, Mr Christie tasked Urban Renewal divisions to conduct profiles on each home in their constituencies, adding that he will continue to rededicate resources until anti-crime initiatives are completely mobilised.

“I said to the Minister of National Security, I’m not prepared to have my own legacy, my own reputation, be tied to a total reliance on the RBPF and the leadership of that force. And so to the extent that I am leader of the country, I am going to be intrusive in ensuring that the system which we are operating under is accountable to the people of this country, and I have the provision where I’m going to require them to be accountable to the people of this country,” he said.

Reducing the fear of crime is a top priority, said Mr Christie, who pointed to its negative impact on development and international relations.

He said: “I said to the police force when I talk about saturation, I’m talking about having identified where every killing took place in New Providence and where the preponderance of them took place in the constituency represented by me, and the constituency represented by Dr (Bernard) Nottage.

“If I have to put a policeman and a police car on every corner as they do in some countries, we are going to communicate to the criminals in this country that we are going to root them out wherever they are, whatever it takes.

“We’re not going to allow a small group of young men - sometimes harboured by their parents, sometimes by their girlfriends - we are not going to let them destroy the future of our country.

“We are going to recalibrate our resources and dedicate them to this fight because we cannot have the wild west in this country where young men ride around and shoot people down as if they are dogs.”

Mr Christie also underscored the importance of understanding that young criminals were also victims of circumstance, upbringing, or environment, and also needed help.

He added: “We cannot have people frightened to go out of their homes, frightened to go to parks; we cannot allow that to happen in the Bahamas.”

Man Perry needs someone to talk too. Does he realize his only legacy is that of failure? This dude has zero accomplishments in his 40 plus years in service with zero accomplishments. And he worrying about his legacy? He aint serious. Only thing he's worried about is that pittance of a pension he's going to get....

A small group of young men?!?! 10 years ago more than 50% of our population was under 25, today it's probably 10% or more higher. A small group of young men? Dude. It's a friggin army. Wake up fool.

Source : http://psychcentral.com/encyclopedia/20…">Delusions of Grandeur

A delusion of grandeur is the fixed, false belief that one possesses superior qualities such as genius, fame, omnipotence, or wealth. It is most often a symptom of schizophrenia, but can also be a symptom found in psychotic or bipolar disorders, as well as dementia (such as Alzheimer’s).

The diagnosis is listed above, but, i forget which one it is.

People with a delusion of grandeur often have the conviction of having some great but unrecognized talent or insight. They may also believe they have made some important discovery that others don’t understand or appreciate.

The discovery either the crime plan or the 10,000 jobs, which were ready from day 1

Grandiose delusions may have religious content, such as the person believes he or she has received a special message from God or another deity.

There, God gave the country to the PLOP.

Sometimes, in popular language, this disorder may be known as “megalomania,” but is more accurately referred to as narcissistic personality disorder if it is a core component of a person’s personality and identity. In such disorders, the person has a greatly out-of-proportion sense of their own worth and value in the world. People with this issue can also sometimes have a taste for the finer, more extravagant things in life.

Me thinks more than one people in the govt have them delusions

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 10 months ago

Delusional is correct. When he played the Chinese emperor in the Boxing Day charade, I'm almost confident in his mind he envisioned himself as just as grande of a leader of the Bahamas Islands. I like the "may have religious content" it always grips the supporters, especially if a prophet supports your plan.

This is halarious, but true, this guy has no connection with reality.

#He also said he will not have his legacy tied to a total reliance on the police and its leadership.

Yuh see Commissioner Greenslade? It would have been better for you to do what was right than to bow to the whims of these politicians. They asked you to bend the rules, hands off on the webshops, they asked you to bend them again, massage the crime numbers, make us appear to look good and what did you get? A public that does not trust you. And what do they give you as a reward? They blame the increasing crime on YOU. No less than PGC himself is saying he is taking charge of the police force because you are doing a horrible job of it! I wonder what ever happened to his own national security minister of his UR 2.0 that he said was working brilliantly 6months into his term....in any event, start protecting what's left of your good name

A rather egotistical statement Mr. Prime Minister. YOUR reputation is frankly irrelevant. The reputation of The Bahamas is of much more concern.

nassaudaddy 10 years, 10 months ago

Mr. Christie,if you had surrounded yourself with some better people rather than a bunch of old Goats like BJ Nottage and Bradley Roberts to name a few. You may have gotten some better advice and maybe you would have had a legacy. All you have now is a total failure to govern this country and lots of failed policies' YOu let the number men control you and You're still not convinced that you are just a puppet Prime Minister who's afraid of your Ministers and Members. Grow some TETICLES and while you're at it let them give you some backbone and spine because you're lacking all of the necessary Manhood parts to make you relevant.

Yet, another bunch of government paid employees spending taxpayers money to party. But maybe they paid for their luncheon out their own pockets? PM are you not at all concerned about your legacy concerns, also including questions as to, why in the hell is the Urban Renewal staff holding a holiday luncheon? Did you do the Christmas dance with the workers Mr. PM? PM what is the real purpose of your Urban Renewal project? How many hundreds of many thousands of taxpayers money were spent for government workers to party over the Christmas and New Year's? OM did they serve FREE booze at taxpayers expense? Champagne too?

B_I_D___ 10 years, 10 months ago

You go Tal...but hey...al dem workers are 'owed' the free luncheon and booze and probably all got bonuses too, despite the dismal failure of the program itself. Must be nice to get paid to fail. Who's hiring, I'm game to make a failure of an attempt for $$$$$.

TalRussell 10 years, 10 months ago

Comrade BID I will confess when the PM said some weeks back that he was too tired and should not have answered a reporters question, I bought it as a reasonable explanation by the PM for saying something off-the-cuff he hadn't really given rested thought to. But is it just me or does he not look pretty damn rested in the luncheon's photo?

Mr Christie tasked Urban Renewal divisions to conduct profiles on each home in their constituencies

Ahmmm, is anyone else concerned? The technically skillless UR kitchen workers, lunch vendors, janitors and campaign staff workers have now been mandated to form intelligence gathering task forces in their communities. Can you imagine petty Ms Bull In a China Shop in Grand Bahama being responsible for identifying who is and is not a good citizen in her neighborhood? This will resemble Nazi Germany when neighbours were reporting neighbours and off to the camps with you.

Where does Perry Christie come up with these asinine suggestions? Or is he trying to top "selling sand to the US" or publicly embarrassing Izmarillian and then later telling him publicly (again) that they have to be able to work out their differences as if Izmarillian had been the one acting like a child? Can any sensible person in the party show him how dangerous his suggestion is? There are three already established professionally trained avenues that he could have thought of and kept to himself and team, social services, statistics and the police.

This is mind boggling....it truly is. UR Is a failure. It was improperly staffed from the beginning, no clearly defined objectives, is leaderless and will never produce anything worth the cost expended. Silk purse and sow's ear.

Yes, I noticed this stupid remark right away. You should read the article in yesterday's other daily newspaper (offices in Oakesfield) where the PM states that he goes into every home in his constituency and knows who votes FNM or PLP. A vote is supposed to be secret; he can assume, but even then how someone's votes is no one's business. He is supposed to be the PM of the Bahamas not the PM of PLP supporters only. Nazi Germany is right!

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 10 months ago

Hmmm...what happens when Maximum Leader Christie decides that the Cleansing programme is working so well in the ghetto, he will apply it to all of the Bahamas? Because that is what happens when cancer goes unchecked, it doesn't stay in the diseased organ, it spreads to the whole body.. Remember Tommy Turnquest?

"While Mr Turnquest said he is concerned about all murders, he said his focus is applied to random killings, not domestic violence nor retaliation or drug related conflicts"

The murder rate was "ok" when "criminals" were being killed but then suddenly a business woman was shot and BD was robbed and a man gunned down on Bay St and a boy waiting on Junkanoo results was shot. One of "us". And then the Prime Minister woke up, he started blaming everyone else, but he woke up...but its too late, it will take generations to turn this disease back.

When people in Treasure Cove and Sandy Port and Lyford Cay are being profiled, bank accounts reviewed, pulled in for questioning based on some lunch vendor's speculation will it still be ok?

This PM's inability to think in (or out of) the moment is a wrecking ball waiting for action.

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 10 months ago

As my mama used to say "the cat could look at the queen", but they won't just "look at you" and they won't start investigating you because they believe you're raping and robbing, it will be because you're anti-government, a traitor, you're not going along with the program and you're part of the reason why their anti-crime initiatives aren't working.

(I will agree that I've often thought, if I had the money, I would revamp those communities and give the people a community that they would love to take care of, one with lots of green spaces not those broken down parks that the govt likes to tout, real green spaces. But back to Kansas, I don't have that kind of money.)

Putting this kind of program in the hands of the PM and Fred "why consult the people" Mitchell, is a disaster waiting to happen.
