THE home court advantage continues to work out in favour of the DW Davis Pitbulls as they remained atop the GSSSA Junior Boys basketball standings with another blowout win.
The Pitbulls doubled the AF Adderley Tigers yesterday, 60-30, for their sixth consecutive win of the season.
Torry Bowe led the Pitbulls with a game high 15 points, nine in the fourth quarter.
Cameron Strachan added nine points while Tavares Deveaux chipped in off the bench with seven points.
“It’s Pitbull pride we have here at DW Davis in Pitbull country, so whenever the game is in here we are going to represent,” head coach Mark Hanna said. “Every year I try to carry four seventh graders and four eighth graders so I can have at least eight guys coming back on the team every year. I also travel a lot to tournaments in the Family Islands and when we do that we try to carry two teams. All summer we work along with the Kevin Johnson Development Camp so they play all summer in tournaments and camps. These guys are basketball hungry.”
DW Davis jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Tigers reached the scoreboard for the first time midway through the period.
After allowing the score, the Pitbulls responded with another 6-0 run to take their first 10-point lead on a Strachan layup, 12-2.
The Tigers had trouble dealing with the full court trap and the turnovers, coupled with 0-6 shooting from the line in the first quarter which led to the early deficit.
The Pitbulls led 18-4 at the end of the first period.
Deveaux opened the second with a three pointer on the Pitbulls’ first possession.
It was one of three shots from beyond the arch they would make in the period.
Bowe made a pair at the line to give his team a 26-6 lead at the 2:50 mark in the half.
Following another rare score for the Tigers, the Pitbulls responded with a quick 8-0 run.
Deveaux delivered an assist to spark the run, followed by a three pointer, fast break layup and a pair at the line. They took a 34-10 lead into the half.
In the third, the Tigers would open with a layup but the DW Davis’ full court trap stifled any comeback efforts.
The Pitbulls gained further separation with the help of Strachan who scored seven of his nine points in the third.
The versatile wing was the beneficiary of several fast break opportunities and scored five consecutive points to give his team a 40-12 lead. His late layup gave the Pitbulls their biggest lead of the game and pushed it over 30 points for the first time, 49-18 at 1:57 mark. They took a 51-20 lead into the fourth.
The final period was all Bowe as he was the only Pitbull to score in the fourth and narrowly missed outscoring the Tigers.
The Tigers actually outscored the Pitbulls in the period, 10-9, but it was Bowe’s dominance in the paint that kept the lead hovering near the 30-point mark and out of reach.
It was the Pitbulls’ second consecutive win by 20 points or more following a 50-28 win over Anatol Rodgers on January 8.
