BASKETBALL

ROLLE’S BIG

PERFORMANCE

WALTIEA Rolle played one of her best games on Sunday for the Haskovo 2012 women’s basketball team. Presently, ranked at No.5 in the league with a current record of 4-8, Haskovo went up against Dunav 8806, the No.1 team, with a record of 9-3.They eventually lost 68-59. Rolle led the team with 25 points and 19 rebounds and one steal, garnering an efficiency rate of 26. She would go on to be named the second best performer of the week for the NBL League because of her outstanding performance.

Haskovo is scheduled to play again Sunday when they face the No.6 Rilski, who are currently 3-9 and they are surely looking for a win.

BASKETBALL

ROSE CORRECTION

THE late Cecil Rose attended the Jordan Prince Williams High School and not St Augustine’s College before he went on to Miami Jackson and then the University of Houston. The Tribune apologises to the Thompson family for the error.

VOLLEYBALL

NPVA ACTION

AS the New Providence Volleyball Association winds down its regular season, two games were showcased at the DW Davis gymnasium on Sunday evening.

In the first match, the youthful Central Gas Cougars, after losing the first set in a nail biter 23-25, came back with a vengeance behind Brittney Deveaux’s 16 points to defeat the more veteran Lady Tech in five tough sets 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15 and 15-8. In a losing effort, Rochelle Henfield led the Lady Techs with 13 points.

In the second match, the Scotiabank Defenders moved closer to clinching their 6th consecutive pennant title by winning over Team Champions, 25-21, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-19. Ian Pinder and Shedrick Forbes led the offence for the Defenders.

Canaan Ferguson led his team in the loss.

The NPVA is slated to continue its regular season on Wednesday night with another double header starting at 7:30pm.

BOXING

CABC’S SHOW

CHAMPION Amateur Boxing Club, in conjunction with Platinum Sports Entertainment, is getting ready to host its “Best of the Best” Amateur Boxing Show on February 1 at the Platinum Sports Entertainment Centre on Dowdeswell St and Christie Ave.

The box-off starts at 8pm with the main attraction between Joshua Nixon and Johnny Nelegue, plus five other matches. Awards will be presented to the most improved boxer, most outstanding boxer and best fight. All amateur boxers and boxing clubs are welcome to participate.

BSC FAMILY FUN

RUN/WALK

THE Baptist Sports Council is scheduled to hold its annual Family Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, February 1. The event will begin at 6am from the Charles W Saunders High School, Jean Street with the runners and the walkers travelling in two different directions.

The categories in both segments for male and female will be 15-and-under, 19-and-under, 30-and-under, 40-and-under, 50-and-under and over-50.

The registration fee is $10. Trophies will be presented to the first three finishers in each category. The event is open to the public.

JBLN ACTION

THE Junior Baseball League of Nassau is all set to open its 25th season of youth baseball and softball 10am Saturday, January 18. The opening ceremonies are slated to start at 10am with the march in of all 32 baseball teams and seven softball teams.

Dignitaries and officials scheduled to attend include the Minister of Sports Dr Danny Johnson, BBF president Craig Kemp, BBF secretary general Theodore Sweeting, the president of Pony International, Abe Key and numerous recognised individuals including the original founders of JBLN in 1989.

The league is proud to announce that 490 boys and girls are scheduled to play baseball and softball in the 2014 season in seven divisions.

Tee Ball 5-6 - 6 teams; Coach Pitch 7-8 - 6 teams; Minor League 9-10 - 4 teams; Major League 11-12 5 teams; Junior League 13-15 - 6 teams; Senior League 16-19 - 5 teams and Girls Softball 12-19 - 7 teams.

Immediately after the opening ceremonies, the 2014 league play will start at 12:30pm.

BAAA SCHEDULE

AFTER kicking off its 2014 season on Saturday with the annual Odd Distance Track and Field Meet at the old Thomas A Robinson stadium, the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations will continue with another meet on Saturday.

• T-Bird Flyers Track Club’s Track Meet at at the TAR Stadium, starting at 9am Saturday, January 18

• Mary Nabb Relays at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex Saturday, January 25

• National High School Relays at the TAR Stadium

BSF CALENDAR

AFTER taking a break for the Christmas holiday, the Bahamas Swimming Federation is now preparing for the start of its 2014 season, which will see swimmers moving up in their respective age groups. The following meets are on tap for the month of January:

• Swift Swimming - Gunite Invitational at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Swim Complex, Friday, January 17 at 6pm and Saturday, January 18 at 9am

• Barracuda Swim Club at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Swim Club Friday, January 31 at 6pm and Saturday, February 1 at 9am.

FOOTBALL

BFFL ELECTIONS

The Bahamas Flag Football League (BFFL) will be conducting elections to select its inaugural executive board.

The election dates are today (Tuesday, January 14) and Saturday, January 18.

Voting will be held at Kingsway Academy on Tuesday, January 14 6-9 pm and on Saturday, January 18 10am to 2pm also at Kingsway Academy.

Voting is open to any and all members of all registered teams of the 2013 season.

BSC AGM ELECTION

THE Baptist Sports Council is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting 10am Saturday, January 18 at the Charles W Saunders High School, Jean Street.

Reports by the director and the treasurer will be made, followed by the elections.

All positions will be available, inclusive of director, assistant director, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and assistant and special project officers. All interested persons ca be nominated from the floor.

The election is open to all persons who are interested in making a contribution to the BSC. Breakfast will be served.
