Engineers at work assessing bridge structure

THE latest assessment of the old Paradise Island Bridge is underway.

The government ordered the $130,000 study because the existing data on the life-span of the bridge, built in the 1960s, was deemed insufficient.

Engineers are now moving along the length of the bridge, installing stress gauges to measure its weight capacity and determine whether or not a new bridge will have to be built in the near future.

The previous board of the Bridge Authority left in place a recommendation for a replacement bridge.

However, Ministry of Works engineers say it is still unclear if this will be necessary.

It has been estimated that a new structure would cost around $50 million to build.

Engineers have said the work will have minimal impact on traffic flow, but there was some minor congestion on the bridge yesterday, as a portion of one lane was closed.

Here is what you don't know. The bridge generates around $16 million a year with the toll. It is long paid for. Where is all the money gone?

And ... take a look at the picture to the right. One of the girders has dropped down about 8 inches. This is the bridge going from PI to East Bay Street. It has been that way for several years. There a big hole near the expansion plate. Do I trust it? Noooooooo !!!
