FOR the second consecutive year, students from Drake University are visiting Nassau to participate in the Leadership at Sea program which focuses on teamwork, leadership and seamanship.
During the visit, the group, comprising of 20 students will get a unique opportunity to learn about the historical and cultural elements of Bahamian society.
They will pay a courtesy call on Governor General of The Bahamas, Sir Arthur Foulkes, meet with representatives from the Bahamas Government and engage faculty and staff during meetings at the College of The Bahamas. They will also partner with COB students to participate in a community service project. During the “Leadership at Sea” program the group will also be given a tour of the Norwegian Cruise Liner “Epic” and volunteered at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure and Marathon Bahamas events at the weekend.
The students will spend time aboard the Liberty Clipper, a US Coast Guard licensed 125-foot gaff-rigged schooner. The ship serves as a leadership laboratory enabling students to rotate through ship positions and attend sessions with captain and crew.
The students visited the US Embassy where they participated in a roundtable discussion with US Charg� d’Affaires John Dinkelman and other Embassy officials including US Coast Guard Liaison Officer Doug Jannusch. Mr Dinkelman discussed the bilateral cooperation between The Bahamas Government and the US Embassy and the role of Foreign Service Officers in promoting the partnership with The Bahamas.
Lt CMDR Jannusch highlighted the role of the US Coast Guard and Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos, (OPBAT), a partnership between the United States, The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands’ law enforcement agencies in the areas of search and rescue, migrant interdiction, border protection, and counter-narcotics efforts.
