Remember Gus Cooper

EDITOR, The Tribune.

The name “Gus Cooper” rang in my household a lot during the fifties.

My parents (Horace and Cynthia Wright) were both teachers. She taught at Eastern Senior, and he taught Art at all Government Schools during this period.

Every day my mother came home, three names, Gus Cooper, Kirk Knowles, and Perry Christie would be mentioned as mischievous boys who gave her problems in a nice way, as they were some of her favourite students.

“Gus”always told me that my father, through Art was very instrumental in paving the way for him becoming a cultural icon.
Coming from the Eastern district “Gus” always found it hard to believe that I pulled for the “Saxons”. His son “Cisco” in describing him as being an “unapologetic perfectionist” I think may have contributed heavily to that.

Whenever we met, and the topic Junkanoo came up, his remarks to me and I quote “Horace and Cynthia” (no disrespect) would turn over in their graves if they know you pull for the Saxons.

Condolences to his wife, children and the Valley Boys Junkanoo Group. We have lost a fine Bahamian son. May his soul rest in peace.
