AROUND 90 students took part in a Junior Golf Clinic at the 2014 PureSilk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, held at the Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island yesterday.
The students, from schools throughout New Providence, interacted with golf pros including Jennifer Song, Symetra Tour Alumnae and Kris Tamulis, as well as Georgette Rolle – two-time Bahamas national women’s amateur champion.
In two separate sessions, the students were taught the basics of gripping the club, the fundamentals of the golf swing and other techniques.
The pros fielded questions from the students regarding their golfing careers, education and lifestyles. The general message was that hard work pays off.
“Golf has become a large part of my life, so it matters. I love it so much and that’s what makes it so important,” said Rolle, who has been playing for 21 years, starting at the age of seven.
Samantha Cartwright of the Training and Education Unit of the Ministry of Tourism said an invitation was sent out to schools inviting students who were interested in golf to attend the clinic. Two students from each school were chosen to participate.
Greg Rolle, director of Sports Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism, said the Bahamas is pleased to work with LPGA and its affiliates to bring the PureSilk Bahamas Classic back this year.
Around 110 players will compete on the famed 72-hole Ocean Club Golf Course over four days for a chance to win $195,000.
This is the second time the Ocean Club is hosting the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic, which ends Sunday, January 26.
