Bettering the Bahamas through 'Volun-touism'

ONE of the largest marketers of employee benefits in the United States, Assurant Employee Benefits, is coming to The Bahamas.

It has been operating in Kansas City, Missouri for more than 100 years, a provider of specialised insurance products and related services.

Next month the company’s goodwill will affect the lives of the many Bahamians facing chronic hunger and food insecurity.
Through a partnership with local non-profit food distributor, Hands For Hunger, nearly 100 sales team members of Assurant Employee Benefits will spend a portion of their time in The Bahamas volunteering.

“Whenever we are fortunate enough to travel for meetings, we identify groups and organisations that will benefit most from our assistance,” says Patty Wolfe of Assurant Employee Benefits.

She said: “Our goal is to always leave each destination we visit a little better.”

Under the direction of Hands For Hunger, the Assurant Employee Benefits team will take part in a variety of volunteer activities, beginning with an educational debrief about the reality of hunger in the Bahamas and the importance of their contributions.

The remainder of the day will be spent using the manpower of Assurant Employee Benefits’ nearly 100 volunteers who will sort, prepare and pack non-perishable items and canned goods into 500 emergency food boxes for distribution throughout New Providence.
In addition to lending a helping hand Assurant Employee Benefits will host a private auction to benefit of Hands For Hunger, providing financial support that will allow the organisation to continue its good work and expand its programs.

Currently in its sixth year of operation, Hands For Hunger has provided more than 600,000 pounds of fresh, prepared food to those most in need through food rescue and distribution. To meet the growing need, Hands For Hunger will include quarterly deliveries of shelf-stable items to the kitchens of its 13 recipient outreach agencies.

Abigail Asgaralli, Executive Director, Hands For Hunger said: “Assurant Employee Benefits’ assistance and financial contribution next month will be timely and far-reaching as we introduce a new, sustainable pantry program called The H4H Shelves.”
