More than 30 arrests over weekend

IT WAS a busy weekend for police as more than 30 people were detained for questioning in connection with a variety of crimes and infractions.

One 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after police discovered an unlicenced firearm.

The incident took place just before 7pm on Taylor Street off East Street when the man, seeing officers approaching, dropped an object and ran.

After a short foot chase the officers caught him. They also recovered a handgun containing a quantity of ammunition.

On the same day, a joint operation between the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) and the Firearm Tracing and Investigations Unit led to the arrest of six men, ages 42, 33, 42, 26, 23 and 22.

Acting on intelligence, officers executed a search warrant on a home in Kemp Road, where they found a quantity of marijuana and ammunition.

Then, at around 2am this morning, officers from the Flying Squad arrested two men, ages 37 and 19, on the corner of Carmichael and Lazaretto Roads.

They are being questioned in connection with a January 25 murder.

A silver BMW thought to have been stolen in that incident was also recovered.

A few hours later, Flying Squad and Mobile Division officers arrested four men between the ages of 33 and 40, along with a 33 year old woman, after finding a firearm.

The arrests took place at a bar on Baillou Hill Road south of Dillet Street.

On Friday, two men, ages 43 and 20, were detained in Elizabeth Estates after a quantity of marijuana was found during a search.

Another joint operation in the Southeastern Division, dubbed ‘Operation Take Back Our Streets’ led to nine arrests.

A number of search warrants were executed, resulting in burglary, causing harm, drug possession and vehicle theft arrests.

Also in the Southwestern Division, ‘Operation Nite Life’ led to 12 arrests in connection with: possession of an imitation firearm, fraudulent documents, breach of the Immigration Act, disorderly behaviour and obscene language, housebreaking and outstanding court warrants.

Three drivers were cited for traffic violations and three nightclub owners on Faith Avenue were notified of intended prosecution for Breach of the Business License Act.

In Grand Bahama, officers on patrol stopped a champagne Buick Sabre on Frobisher Drive and conducted a search.

They found a Glock 40 pistol containing one live round. Two men, ages 39 and 30, are being questioned.
