Plants, plants, plants!

THE big day is once again upon us. Mark your calendar for Saturday morning, February 1. Only once a year will you find an event quite like this one.

The Horticultural Society of the Bahamas is bringing their members together for the sale of the year!

Held at the Retreat, home of the Bahamas National Trust on Village Road, there will be hundreds of varieties of plants to buy at reasonable prices.

HSB was founded in 1983 by the Late Sara Bardelmeier for the purpose of improving the quality of the growing of various plants, and of improving the knowledge of the people who grow them. The club meetings that usually includes a speaker discuss various aspects of propagation, growing tips and new species of plants. To date the club has 85 members and meets in members’ gardens each month. Then, once a year, members sell their extra plants at the HSB Plant sale.

Do you want orchids?

Do you want vegetable plants?

Do you want fruit trees, palms and flowering bushes?

How about hanging baskets? Or bromeliads? Or landscape plants? Or ferns for your shaded areas?

You will see these and much, much more as you enter the gate at the plant sale. There is no admission charge to enter and browse through the area. Early hours are always hectic with people looking for the premium buys.

There will be beautiful plants to buy as members of the club bring their home-grown items to sell. This is always an impressive sale, and horticultural club members have been nurturing their plants for many months to give the best selection. And, don’t forget the $5 table for bargains galore!

Gates open at 8am and will remain open until 1pm. The Bahamas National Trust will also be holding Da Market at the same time in the Retreat as well, so you can enjoy browsing two sales in one for a morning of fun.
