THE Rotary Club of East Nassau donated $1,500 to the Junior Baseball League of Nassau to pay registration fees for 15 girls who would otherwise not have been able to afford to play.
Accepting the donation from Rotary, Julian Brown of the JBLN explained that the aim of league is to provide young Bahamians with an opportunity to participate in an activity that promotes healthy living through athletics and encourages social development.
Participants learn important life lessons such as goal setting, self discipline, winning and losing graciously and showing respect for players, coaches and umpires.
The JBLN started with 60 players and now, 25 years later, boasts a total of 490 players from more than 25 public and private schools.
The Girls Softball Division began three years ago with 50 girls.
Today, there are 100 in the programme, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme aims to help them build self-esteem and cultivate team spirit.
