SWIMMING

The Bahamas’ 30-member team returned from the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships with a fourth place finish. On the final night of competition on Monday, the Bahamas collected another 11 medals, inclusive of four gold, three silver and four bronze.

Ariel Weech broke the CISC 100m free record and won the high point trophy for the girls’ 18-and-over division.

Gold medallists

Ariel Weech broke the 2008 18-and-over 100 free record with a swim of 57:47; Ariel Weech in 15-17 50 fly in 28.42; N’Nhyn Fernander in 15-17 50 fly in 25.59 and girls 13-14 400m medley relay team of Celia Campbell, Albury Higgs, Jasmine Gibson and Lilly Higgs in 4:42.62.

Silver medallists

Samuel Gibson in 11-12 200IM in 2:31.03; Samuel Gibson in 11-12 50 fly in 29.81 and boys 15-17 400 free relay team of Gershwin Greene, Drew Bastian, N’Nhyn Fernander and Kohen Kerr in 3:41.16.

Bronze medallists

Samuel Gibson in 11-12 100 free in 59.76; Amber Pinder in 11-12 50 fly in 31.05; Darren Laing in 11-12 50 fly in 29 and boys 13-14 400 medley relay team of Miller Albury, Joshua Wong, Alec Sands and Joshua Roberts in 4:18.63.

JOHNSON IN

MAIN EVENT

TAUREANO ‘Reno’ Johnson will be back in the spotlight tonight when he takes on Mike Gavronski at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington. The two will appear in the main event for the vacant World Boxing Council’s Continental Americas middleweight title that will be carried live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Johnson, 30, goes into the ring with a 14-1 win-loss record with 15 knockouts. In his last fight on April 4 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Johnson suffered his first loss with a 10th round technical knockout by Curtis Stevens. It was Johnson’s first fight for the year.

Gavronski, 28, is 14-0 with a draw. His last fight was a sixth round decision over Kevin Hand at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

BOXING

CHOSEN ONE SHOW

THE Strikers Boxing Club, coached by Ronn Rodgers, will stage another amateur boxing show 7:30pm Saturday at the Enoch Backford Auditorium, Carmichael Road. 

The show is dubbed “The Chosen Ones Will Rise” and will comprise of 5-7 bouts featuring boxers from the US against local fighters. Among the local competitors expected in action are Tyrone Oliver, Kendric Stuart, Amron Sands, D’Angelo Swaby, Israel Johnson and Davon Hamilton, all from Team Strikers.

FIDELITY, Colina and the Royal Bank were all winners as the Banker’s League continued its regular season action on Saturday at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. Here’s a summary of the matches played:

Fidelity 12, Scotia Bank 6

Alec Rolle went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the winners. David Gardiner was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored; Chavez Johnson was 3-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs and Neville Rolle was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs. Chavez Thompson was the winning pitcher and Shane Albury got the loss. Hector Rolle went 1-for-3 with two RBI for the losers.

Colina 13, CIBC/FCIB 3

Jeff Randall went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and a run scored and Stephen Duncombe was 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in the win. Clint Paul was the winning pitcher and Garth McDonald suffered the loss.

Royal Bank 22,

Commonwealth Bank 19

Sherwin Johnson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs and Lloyd Davis was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Julian Seymour was the winning pitcher and Carrington Johnson got the loss. Patrick McFall was 2-for-5 with a homer, five RBI and two runs scored in the loss.

LEAGUE

The City Bowling League completed its 2013 - 2014 season with a thriller last night at Mario’s Bowling & Entertainment Centre. Going into the final game of the team championship play-offs & tied 3-3, Ten Back Strikers went into overdrive mode and blew away the powerful team of Telco Enterprises 970 to 856 pins.   

Ten Back was led by a 209 average from Lee Davis and an 181 average by Janice Hoyte over the seven games. Telco Enterprises leaders were Mario Brown with a 184 average and Camille Burnside with 170 average.
