A WEEK after announcing the other disciplines for the 20th Commonwealth Games, the Bahamas Olympic Committee has finally released a 35-member athletic team that will compete in Glasgow, Scotland.
The list, however, is contingent on 10 of the athletes who are waiting to be given the final approval from the Local Organising Committee from Glasgow where the games, the biggest international meet outside of the Olympic Games, will be held from July 23 to August 3.
Last night, BOC secretary general Rommel Knowles revealed the names of those athletes who will be travelling to Glasgow with the six-member swimming, five-member cycling, two-member judo and one-man wrestling team.
The list was late in coming, according to Knowles, because the Bahamas Amateur Athletic Association submitted more athletes that were on the original long list and they had to wait on getting clearance from the LOC in Glasgow to either add or replace them.
The list of athletes includes those athletes who would have been confirmed and those who are still waiting on their approval from the LOC because of their late entries that came as a result of the BAAA submitting the names after the National Open Track and Field Championships was held over the weekend of June 27-30.
The BOA had to submit the entire team for approval by the LOC by June 25, but Knowles said they had to seek the extra time to compile the list, which they were granted. As a result of submitting the team late, Knowles said they had to wait on the approval from the LOC before they released the team.
The team, which will be managed by Ralf McKinney and coached by Frank ‘Pancho’ Rahming, assisted by Peter Pratt, Ronald Cartwright and Mae Miller, will comprise of sufficient athletes for the Bahamas to field teams in both the men’s and women’s 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 metre relays.
While ‘Golden Knight’ Ramon Miller will be missing in action because of an injury he sustained during the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s inaugural World Relays in May at the Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium, fellow relay team-mate Demetrius Pinder has opted not to travel as he is also coming off an injury.
The Bahamas will have a combination of youth and experience as there are athletes coming in events from the 100 to 800 metres on the field and all of the jumping events on the field.
If all of the entries are accepted before the week is out, the Bahamas will have a total of 18 men and 17 women for the total of 35.
