Baseball League handed gift by US Embassy

THE Freedom Farm Baseball League’s programme to raise awareness of literacy and education among young Bahamian players has received a boost from the US Embassy, which has donated 200 scholastic books.

Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Neda Brown met League officials on Monday to discuss the Embassy’s support and presented the books to Castino Sands, the Commissioner, and Kenny Mondesir, Assistant Director of Sponsorship, to assist with the league’s educational development programme.

The books will be distributed to outstanding baseball players in recognition of their performance throughout the season. Some will be given out during Freedom Farm’s “Literacy Day” event in the upcoming baseball season, where children from the wider community will be invited to participate. The league’s motto is “Higher learning through the sport of Baseball.”

Freedom Farm is a non-profit baseball league with a membership of approximately 650 children and young adults. The league focuses not only on developing baseball skills but also on building character, teaching unity through teamwork and encouraging the pursuit of higher education.

With this latest donation, the league has received approximately 600 books from its partners towards its goal of collecting 2,000 books by January, 2015.
