CLAY Moxey emerged victorious in the latest ‘Sands Man in the Boat’ sculling races in front of hundreds of Bahamians on Saturday at the Grand Bahama Regatta at Taino Beach. Moxey beat Equilla Lafleur and Steven Rolle, who won previous rounds at the National Family Island Regatta in Exuma and Long Island Regatta.
As winner, Moxey received 10 cases of Sands beer, a trophy and will also be flown to New Providence later in the year to compete in the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ National Championships. The scullers have little time to recover before the next rounds in Treasure Cay, Abaco, on Sunday at 6pm.
“My staff and I are extremely grateful for all of the support that Bahamians have given us in the various sculling races,” said Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company owner and CEO James ‘Jimmy’ Sands who presented trophies. “As many people know sculling is an important part of my heritage, I hope that with the continued support sculling will regain the notoriety it once had.”
This year’s 19th Grand Bahama Regatta marked a new beginning as it was cancelled last year due to economic challenges. But thanks to community supporters like the Brewery and others the two-day event was officially opened on Friday evening and welcomed 10 sailing boats and a number of participants from all over the Bahamas.
