GLASGOW, Scotland — They had a whirlwind tour around the city getting ready to compete. Now it’s up to the cycling team to pedal their way to prominence in competition at the 20th Commonwealth Games.
Having been here since the start of the games on July 23, the team will be the last discipline for Team Bahamas to see action in when Jay Major and Chad Albury contest the men’s individual time trials 5:31am EST on Thursday.
The rest of the team will join them in the gruelling road race on Sunday, the final day of competition before the closing ceremony takes place.
“They are the last of the few to go and their training has been going very good,” said Roy Colebrooke, the chef de mission for Team Bahamas at the games. “They have been putting in 3-4 hours of training every day and we are now just waiting to see how it goes.”
Colebrooke, who also doubles as the president of the Bahamas Cycling Federation, said in addition to their driver from England getting the wrong direction, causing them to take a wrong turn on a major highway and being escorted off by police, they also had one or two mishaps in training.
“We had some flat tires and a handle broken, but those things were able to replace,” he said. “Everyone is in high spirits. Biggie had a road rash when he fell after touching a back wheel, but he’s doing very well and the team is in high spirits.”
Musgrove said as these are the “friendly games,” the cyclists are enjoying themselves and making new friends.
Barron ‘Turbo’ Musgrove, the team coach, said their expectations are very high for the competition.
“We want to actually break into the top 20 or top 30 in terms of the road race and possibly in the 15 in the time trials,” he said. “The guys have been training, they look good and they know the route.
“This is the first time that we have been able to go over the route for a number of days before the competition, so we are just looking for the guys to ride their race. That is the main thing.”
And Wayne Price, the mechanic on the team, said he had a couple of issues to deal with, but there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t take care of. He said everything is in order and the team will be ready to make their presence felt.
