THERE are major changes in the editorial team at The Tribune with the arrival of a new Managing Editor, News Editor and a news reporter in recent weeks. The appointments follow the announcement of Ollie Ferguson as Chief Operating Officer of The Tribune Media Group as the company looks to a multi-media future with its national daily newspaper and five radio stations.

David Chappell, the

former Managing Editor of The Times in London, joins The Tribune as its Managing Editor. Mr Chappell, a journalist with over 20 years experience with The Times, was that paper’s Sports Editor for 12 years and spent from 2004 to 2010 in the Managing Editor’s office there. He returned to The Times to help with its award-winning coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Taneka Thompson rejoins The Tribune after three years with The Nassau Guardian, where she was senior reporter. The highly-regarded Ms Thompson has been appointed News Editor and succeeds Paul Turnquest, who left last month to become Director of Public Relations at Baha Mar. She will continue to write as well as direct news coverage in The Tribune, where she started her career in 2007.

Kyle Walkine has been recruited to join the reporting team from The Bahama Journal and has made an immediate impression with his coverage of the revelations that the US National Security Agency has been recording all cellphone calls made in the Bahamas. Mr Walkine, 25, previously reported for the Jones Communications Network on television, radio and in print.

Welcoming the new arrivals, Robert Carron, president of The Tribune Media Group, said the appointments indicated the scale of the ambitions of the company - founded as a voice for those who have no voice - and recognised the need to develop and modernise.

“We have spent a lot of time looking for the right people to lead The Tribune to the next level and I am delighted we have attracted such journalistic quality, experience and expertise for these key roles,” Mr Carron said. “Engaging the readers and users holds the key to an exciting digital future for media and I am confident that The Tribune Media Group is building a team here in the Bahamas to deliver that while staying true to our core values and our founding principle ‘Being bound to swear to the dogmas of no master’.”

Over the past couple of weeks, the strength of The Tribune’s team has been seen to good effect with coverage of the big stories in the Bahamas in all parts of the newspaper and website, from the exciting IAAF World Relays to analysis of the Budget and the controversial dredging in Bimini.
