Great way to end season for special Olympians

SPECIAL Olympics Bahamas recently held its local end of season bocce tournament and organisers of the event deemed it a smashing success.

The two-day event was held at the Stapledon School grounds, where Special Olympics athletes competed in doubles and team events.

Each year at the end of training season, athletes compete in local and or National competitions for medals and ribbons and of course, bragging rights for the ensuing year.

This year, however, a little more was on the line as the athletes were all showcasing their skills in hopes of being selected to the team that will compete at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which will take place in Los Angeles, California.

Special Olympics Bahamas is a sub program of Special Olympics International and is a volunteer driven, non- profit organisation that provides year round sports training and competition in Olympic type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID).

The Bahamas’ program currently provides training in nine different sports, namely, aquatics (swimming), athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, football (soccer), judo, open water swimming, and tennis.

Persons wishing to become volunteers in the program, or who may wish to make a donation, can either contact Ana Christie (Chairman) or Amanda Moncur (National Director) at the Stapledon School.
