THE US Coast Guard cutter Cormorant, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat, has spent a week in Freeport, Grand Bahama, as part of an expert international exchange in maritime law enforcement between the United States and The Bahamas.
Cormorant, based in Ft Pierce, Florida, performs a myriad of law enforcement and search and rescue missions in the Miami sector of the Florida Straits.
Members of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Marine Unit, the US Coast Guard and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) were involved in the training, which consisted of classroom and hands on training ranging from vessel searches, handcuffing, boatcrew duties, man overboard drills, seamanship and basic navigation.
US Charg d’Affaires John Dinkelman and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Grand Bahama Emrick Seymour presented 14 RDBF members with certificates of completion following the training programme.
The Coast Guard and the RBPF intend to capitalise upon the momentum generated by last month’s visit and plan and further exchanges in the near future, which will serve to improve each agency’s overall inter-operability and responsiveness.
