TENNIS

AFTER earning a berth into the main draw of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures $15,000 Amstelveen, Justin Roberts lost to twenty-year-old fifth seed Bruno Sant’Anna of Brazil in a competitive match on Monday 3-6, 2-6 in what he described as “a few points here and there made the difference”.

Roberts, of The Bahamas, earned his way to the main draw this weekend by defeating three opponents. In the qualifying round of 64, Justin defeated Magnus Michaelis (GER) 62, 61. He followed up this victory by defeating Dominik Boehler (GER) 64,36,62 to advance to the final round of quality against 21 year old ATP ranked and fifth seed Christain Plattes (GER) who Justin defeated 36,43(ret).

Roberts, 17, will be playing doubles tomorrow.

SOFTBALL

AFTER taking a break for the long Labour Day holiday weekend, the New Providence Softball Association will be back in action with its regular season in the 2014 softball league this week at the newly-renovated Bankers Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. The league will play a double header tonight, starting at 7 pm. They will also play a double header on Thursday and again on Saturday nights.

CYLING

THE Baptist Sports Council has announced plans for the staging of its 2014 Cycling Classic. The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, at the National Cycling Track at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. The New Providence Cycling Association, headed by Barron ‘Turbo’ Musgrove, will be assisting the BSC in organizing the event. Categories will include five-and-under, 10-and-under, 15-and-under, 20-and-under and open for both male and female. The entry fee is $5 per person, excluding the 5-and-under. The competition start at 10 am.

VOLLEYBALL

THE Baptist Sports Council has announced plans to host its 2014 Volleyball Classic. The one-day tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 5 and will held at the DW Davis Gymnasium. The New Providence Volleyball Association is assisting the BSC. The competition is opened to all churches in the men and women divisions. Each team is required a maximum of 10 players. The entry fee is $100 per church. The action will begin at 10am.
