“CHURCH out, crab crawling.” – Yes, it’s that time again. Touted as one of the best parties under the Bahamian sun, the 17th annual All Andros Crab Festival is set to be held in Queen’s Park in Fresh Creek, Andros, this weekend.
The event embraces the Bahamian cultural phenomenon of crab catching and all the crab-inspired culinary delicacies.
Every year, thousands flock to the “Big Yard” to indulge in the splendour that is Crab Fest. Persons from near and far travel via boat and plane to come to Andros for an event which was originally founded in 1997 with the purpose of fuelling the local economy.
“We wanted to create something different, something unique to our island that would help boost the island’s economy,” said Peter Douglas, chairmen and one of the founding members of Crab Fest.
Today, the festival has taken on a life of its own. It has evolved into the largest event of the year for the island of Andros and continues to grow.
Crab Fest is not only a time of leisure, but an expression of true Bahamian cultural art form, organisers said. It is about preserving the heritage of crab catching for future generations as well as showcasing this aspect of Bahamian culture to the world.
“This event is all about the crabs. We will be releasing crabs right after the opening ceremony until dawn of the next day. This two-day event will showcase everything crab,” Mr Douglas told Tribune Arts and Entertainment.
Island delights such as crab and rice, crab soup, crab and dough, stuffed crab and more will available for all crab cuisine lovers. For those that wish to showcase their talent, a crab culinary contest and watermelon eating contest will take place during the festival.
And what is a Bahamian festival without home-grown entertainers? Androsian musician and Bahamian icon Elon Moxey is anticipated to grace the stage at this event along with Ira Storr and The Spank Band, Veronica Bishop and D Mac. The popular men’s dance group Juice Unit is also scheduled to performs, as the Fire Dancers, Soul Grovers, Drummers and local bands who will be joining in the fun.
“This year we will also be presenting some of the local produce by the local farmers,” Mr Douglas said. “Andros will be taking on the task of feeding the Bahamas and reducing our food import bill, so showing everyone what we can do will hopefully encourage Bahamians to buy locally.”
Crab Festival has become one of the go-to events for Bahamians who want to enjoy a fun weekend and great food. Every year, thousands of crabs are let go in the park and there is a mad dash to catch them.
“Bring your sacks and comfortable clothes and shoes, ‘cause we crabbing form dusk `til dawn,” Mr Douglas said.
