THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FROM 11:30 AM UNTIL 01:30 PM WEDNESDAY 11TH JUNE 2014.
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN NOW IN EFFECT FOR ELEUTHERA AND ITS ADJACENT WATERS. AT 11:30 AM, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWED A CLUSTER OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS AND MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH A MID TO UPPER LEVEL TROUGH ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS. THE SYSTEM IS MOVING SLOWLY TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST.
SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY. LOCALISED FLOODING COULD OCCUR IN LOW LYING AND FLOOD PRONE AREAS DURING HEAVY DOWNPOURS.
BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
