A LAWYER is to appear in the Court of Appeal today to contest a Supreme Court judge’s ruling finding him in contempt of court.
Geoffrey Farquharson filed his appeal to the country’s second highest court a day after Justice Bernard Turner not only found him to be in contempt of court, but had further fined him $2,000 for his conduct during the Marco Archer murder trial.
Justice Turner gave then-lawyer for Kofhe Eduardo Ferguson Goodman 21 days to make the payment or be subjected to a likely custodial sentence.
The contempt proceedings for Mr Farquharson has dragged on since October 2013 when the judge, following his client being sentenced to death, told the lawyer that he was to appear before him in November to explain his conduct.
The issue surrounding the proceedings concerned statements uttered by Mr Farquharson in two separate sessions during the trial, which called the integrity of the court into question.
There were a number of delays between then and Farquharson’s defence in April this year where he argued that there was no basis for him to be before the court on contempt.
Justice Turner made his ruling last Wednesday and Mr Farquharson launched his appeal within a day of that decision.
