THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FROM 2:30PM EDT UNTIL 5:30PM THURSDAY 12TH JUNE 2014.
A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE NEW PROVIDENCE, THE BERRY ISLANDS, ANDROS, ABACO, ELEUTHERA, EXUMA, AND CAT ISLAND AND THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.
AT 2:30PM OBSERVATION, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS A CLUSTER OF THUNDERSTORMS AND MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH A MID TO UPPER LEVEL TROUGH MOVING TOWARDS THE NORTHWEST AND CENTRAL BAHAMAS. THE SYSTEM IS MOVING SLOWLY TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST.
SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY.
BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTENING CONDUCTORS
