THOUSANDS of Bahamas Electricity Corporation customers were without power for several hours early yesterday morning when, during a lightning storm, the company’s transmission and distribution systems were damaged.

In a press statement released yesterday, BEC said the service was disrupted shortly after 7am during a severe thunderstorm in New Providence. However, the company immediately went to work to restore service to its customers.

“The Bahamas Electricity Corporation wishes to advise residents in New Providence that it has restored electricity supplies to the majority of consumers impacted as a result of the inclement weather experienced early Wednesday morning,” the release said.

“Several areas mainly in the eastern and southern portions of New Providence would have been directly impacted when lightning strikes damaged key infrastructure. BEC teams are continuing their efforts to restore supply to the handful of customers who remain without electricity.”

Up to press time, BEC restored power to Fire Trail Road, Elizabeth Estates, Soldier Road, Gleniston Gardens, Colony Village, St Andrews Beach and Yamacraw Hill.

However, some parts of Fox Hill, High Vista, Leslie Estates and Marshall Road were still without electricity up to press time.

This is the second power outage to affect New Providence this week. On Monday after a generator failed, customers in eastern and southern New Providence were also without electricity.

However, BEC said power was fully restored a few hours later.
