THE Bahamas Karate Academy and Nassau Martial Arts Academy, headed by sensei Erick McKinney and sensei Basil Damianos respectively, took a team of 23 athletes to the United States to compete in the Annual Miyagi Cup International Karate Tournament.
There were over 1,100 karate athletes from other countries and states including Okinawa, Turkey, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Trinidad, New York, New Jersey, Orlando and Miami.
Special training and seminars were held by: Kyoshi Sensei Hirata 8th Dan Black Belt from Okinawa on Kata (forms)
Kyoshi Cleveland Baxter 7th Dan from New York on (WKF Referee) work shop
Sensei Tulay Albear 4X World Kumite Champion from Turkey (Kumite Seminar)
The joint effort saw a total of 23 athletes participate in the tournament, bringing 30 medals back home to the Bahamas. “It was a great experience for the Bahamian karate athletes to know that they competed with the best of their peers and placed first or second in their various categories. It is good to know that what they are doing is recognised not only in the Bahamas but all over the world,” said a press release.
