Workers protest outside Parliament

MORE than 100 Ministry of Works employees protested the government’s failure to uphold their Industrial Agreement outside the House of Assembly yesterday. The workers included plumbers, maintenance staff, sanitation officers and street cleaners.

They said the Industrial Agreement, which in 2005 was signed by former Labour Minister Vincent Peet and Labour Director Harcourt Brown, said that workers should be allowed to be reclassified, promoted and receive hazard pay.

But the workers claimed they have not received increases in hazard and risk allowance for working around septic tanks, dealing with wet excavations and drains and dealing with dusty substances, amongst other things.

They also agitated for “hardship allowance” for those who work on the Out Islands, as is suggested in their Industrial Agreement.

Bahamas Public Service Union President John Pinder supported the workers during their demonstration.
