Nassau, Bahamas - Bahamas Waste hosted four graduate students, who are currently studying at the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) campus, to a tour of its recycling facilities in western New Providence.
The students are in the Coastal Sustainability, Masters of Professional Science (MPS) programme at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), at the University of Miami. The Rosenstiel School offers one of the largest and most comprehensive marine and atmospheric graduate programs in the US.
“Bahamas Waste is pleased to welcome any group small or large that is interested in what we do. To have a delegation of Masters students from the University of Miami, I believe, gives credence to what we are doing
here at Bahamas Waste,” noted Francisco de Cardenas, Bahamas Waste’s managing director.
The purpose of the students’ trip was to learn about the recycling facilities at Bahamas Waste. Students were able to tour the biodiesel processing facility, cardboard baling plant, medical waste incineration facility, and speak with Mr De Cardenas. He also discussed Bahamas Waste’s partnerships with other recycling ventures in Nassau, which include Green Systems Bahamas and Cans For Kids.
“The exposure to life in the field and the valuable time spent making connections with the experienced and widely diverse set of minds here at The Island School and CEI has further fuelled our passion for driving sustainable change,” said Liz Jones, one of the students. “We all are confident that our time here has, and will continue to, inspire us and allow us to grow as students, environmental advocates, and as individuals.”
