BAHAMIAN singer and Grammy Award winner Rik Carey is taking time to develop his solo portfolio with the release of his latest single, “No Ordinary Fling”.

The Baha Men member released the song late last month and has been getting positive feedback from listeners.

“I was always into world percussions and world type rhythmic patterns, and Junkanoo is so rich and captivating, I just had to keep experimenting with it in my music,” he said.

“Ultimately, the goatskin and tom-tom drum rhythms have a strong influence on ‘No Ordinary Fling’, which gives the song its Bahamian and island vibes. From a producer and song writer’s perspective, everything else just fell into place naturally,” Rik told In Ya Ear.

“No Ordinary Fling” is about a Bahamian man who is courting a woman from another country. During their time dating he gives the woman a mini tour around the island and shows her the simple pleasures of island life, sailing and enjoying the sea breeze. Rik teamed up with songwriter Nicholas Huyler for the project.

“So far the response and feedback has been great. The Bahamian airwaves have been very receptive to this new sound I produced,” Rik said.

“I have received a great deal of positive responses on my SoundCloud and various social media, even folks stopping me on the street just to say how much they love the song. I am very thankful.”

Rik said while there is going to be a video for “No Ordinary Fling”, he is currently in the process of deciding on a concept.

“I have a meeting with a very talented Bahamian music video director. I have some concepts in mind in terms of the treatment for the video, but once I meet up with the director, we will exchange concepts. The basis of the treatment is more of an intimate setting of a romance couple,” he said.

Apart from Rik’s recent radio release, “U Can’t Blame Me”, and various radio jingles, the singer has been working on a new album. He intends to keep fans informed about his progress and the release date.

Rik is also working on collaborations with a few Bahamian musicians. He has recently produced the Visage Band’s new song, “Happy Hour”.

“Now I am working on a project for MDeez’s upcoming album, all while juggling my music career as a lead vocalist/song writer for Baha Men. Still, I make time to pick up my paint brushes and a canvas, plus be father and husband to my family,” he said.
