ENVIRONMENT and Housing Minister Kenred Dorsett said yesterday that remediation of the New Providence landfill will start before the end of this fiscal year.

At that time, he said, the private company Renew Bahamas will take over to perform remediation services that are expected to help end many longstanding issues with the city dump.

Renew Bahamas also will be constructing a materials recycling facility (MRF) for the government to manufacture recycles from waste.

Mr Dorsett’s comments after being asked what concrete steps are being taken to finally fix the problems at the city dump following a spree of recent fires which continue to smoulder.

In a move criticised by some, last year Mr Dorsett announced that the government had finalised the terms of a five-year contract with Renew Bahamas to conduct landfill remediation and recycling, as well as to study the New Providence waste stream.

Mr Dorsett has since maintained that the government will retain control of the dump.

Why does the Bahamian government feel they need to maintain control of everything. There is no issue with allowing Bahamian own and operated companies to take control of some things. The landfill being one of them...in fact it most likely would benefit more from the ownership of a privately owned BAHAMIAN company.

So Government pulled another rabbit out of the hat, shortly before WTO rules kick in. No submissions, no transparency, even screwing its own business community.

Brave Davis, Perry Christie and Kenred Dorsett now bear full responsibility for the toxic fumes spewing from the smouldering public dump, wreaking havoc on the health and well being of so many elderly and very young Bahamians. Their non-transparent back-room dealing involving Renew Bahamas will leave our public dump smouldering for many years to come, with hundreds to die a horrible death and thousands to suffer from respiratory ailments of the worse kind. These three are evil cruel monsters of the worse kind who should be made to pay for their horrific failings to extinguishing the existing dump fires and keep it fire-free; failings on their part that rise to the level of crimes against humanity that they should be made fully accountable for.

We’re taught growing up that ‘We the People’ have the power to affect radical change in the voting booth. But this is another fairy tale. Voting only changes the players. It doesn’t change the game. Technology is one major game changer. The technology exists today to completely revolutionize the way we live and govern ourselves.
