RUGBY

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY

Bahamas is scheduled to face the Cayman Islands in an international friendly rugby match 5pm Saturday (May 3) at Freeport Rugby Club​.

In addition, two more international games are set for May 17, May 31 and June 28.

“This is a friendly game, though the result will affect our IRB ranking. The NACRA Caribbean Championships begin for us on May 17 with a home game (in Nassau) against Mexico, then we travel to Turks & Caicos on May 31 and finally we play Jamaica in Nassau on June 28. The winner of the group will be promoted back into Caribbean North Division 1, after our defeats last year to Cayman and Bermuda resulted in our relegation,” according to a press release.

BAHAMAS OPEN JUDO

A press conference is scheduled for 9:30am today (May 2) at the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture. In attendance will be Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson, Cuban Ambassador Ernesto Guzman, Bahamas Olympic Committee President Wellington Miller and Bahamas Judo Federation President D’Arcy Rahming.

The Bahamas Open, the upcoming judo tournament to be held in the Kendal GL Isaacs Gymnasium, is a partnership between the four organisations.

“This is the highest level team of any sport to ever leave Cuba,” Ambassador Guzman said. “Every one of the six-member team is a national champion.”

Kaitlyn Bouyssou, USA Youth Olympic gold medallist, is coming to take part in the great competition. “Only in The Bahamas do I get a chance to fight the great Cubans” she said. “I’m excited to meet some new friends from the different countries.” She is joined by 11 USA national champions.

MINI-BASEBALL TOURNEY

THE Bahamas Baseball Federation is scheduled to hold its third annual 11/12 Mini Baseball Tournament in Eleuthera this weekend. The event, hosted in honour of Eleuthera umpire George Sweeting, is set to be held in Rock Sound. During the opening ceremonies on Saturday, Eleuthera Junior Baseball League of Rock Sound president Larry Forbes will present a crystal award to Sweeting.

Participating leagues are the Legacy Baseball League (LBL), Junior Baseball League of Nassau (JBLN), Exuma Little League of George Town (ELLGT), Spanish Wells Baseball League (SWBL) and the Eleuthera Junior Baseball League of Rock Sound (EJBLRS).

BOWLING

THE top player in the Financial Bowling League competition this week was Sonith Lockhart of RubisOil Stars, who crushed the pins for a huge 275 game and a gigantic 703 three game set. Runner-up MVP of the evening was Stan Bethelof Strike Force with a 244 second high game and a 588 second high set.

The ladies’ MVP of the evening was Joy Lockhart of BTC Night Hawks with a respectable 491 three game set. She was followed by Xynea Johnson of Fidelity Bulldogs, who toppled the pins for a 194 second high game and a 489 second high set. Patrina Cartwright of Sunshine Insurance dropped the pins for the high game of 213.

Other scores of the evening were: Moonlight Strikers blanked Price Waterhouse Coopers 3-0, Leno Corporate Services blanked Rubis Oil Stars 3-0, Fidelity Bulldogs def. Deloitte & Touche 2-1, Strike Force def. Forsythe Communications 2-1, BTC Night Hawks def. Sunshine Insurance 2-1.
